The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is supporting local rugby legends Vagabonds RUFC, by becoming the club’s main travel sponsor for the 2022/2023 season. Keen to enhance the development of sport in the Isle of Man, the Steam Packet Company will cover the cost of off-Island ferry travel for both the men’s and women’s teams, whilst supporting the club financially with various initiatives.

Intent on supporting the development of sport in the younger community, the Company will also be funding all junior teams’ travel costs to and from the UK, with the Isle of Man Steam Packet logo featuring on all the club’s kits.

The rugby club, which is based in Douglas, was established in 1965 and is home to the Island’s only official all-female rugby team, which will be celebrating its 25th anniversary later this season. The Isle of Man Steam Company has a long-standing association with the English Rugby Football Union affiliated club, with the Company having previously subsidised players’ ferry fares.

Brian Thomson, Managing Director of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, commented: ‘The Steam Packet Company is a long-time supporter of sports across the Isle of Man, so it’s an absolute pleasure to continue our long-standing partnership with Vagabonds RUFC.

‘Rugby is a well-loved sport, and as one of the Isle of Man’s oldest rugby clubs, Vagabonds forms the backbone of the Island’s rugby community. Renowned for its training programmes, and player welfare, the club has many exciting plans in the works and as a proud travel sponsor, we look forward to seeing what the 2023 season brings for the club and how we can financially assist them in a variety of ways.’

Vagabonds Chairman John Cannan added: ‘We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Steam Packet Company for their valued sponsorship of the club, which will cover our teams ferry fares throughout the 2022 / 23 season.

‘This will give us the financial freedom we’ve needed to invest in our coaching programmes, equipment, and training facilities, which will be of huge benefit to our players’ development. We have many projects on the horizon that we’re passionate about and the Steam Packet Company’s financial support will provide a crucial boost to enable the club to realise these initiatives.

‘In addition to the Steam Packet Company’s generous sponsorship, I’d also like to thank our brilliant coaches, volunteers, and of course our players, for their continued support of the club throughout the 2022/23 season.
